Where do I begin....I started working out for the first time in my life after my daughter was born in 1997. I was very happy with how weight training transformed my body. I wouldn't say that I ate clean, but I was conscious of eating healthy and I was younger. Well, 3 1/2 years ago I had open heart surgery for an aortic aneurysm. After that surgery, I didn't work out consistently like I had in the past. Since then, I've been in and out of the gym because of some other health issues that I can't control. But after being told I couldn't work out a year and a half ago, I realized that I needed to change the way I ate if I didn't want to grow by a few pounds each year. That's when I ran across Vicki on Facebook. Vicki sent me a nutrition plan that I followed to a "T" for 12 weeks!!! I was shocked at how, after just one week, my body "de-fluffed!" That is what drove me to continue to follow her nutrition advice. Also, I had never felt as good as I did when I was eating clean. I had more energy, wàsnt getting sick and more importantly wasn't struggling with my own self mentally about my body!! That was a freeing feeling!!!! But once I got the ok from the doctor to workout again, I thought that gave me the go ahead to eat some of those foods that I had quit eating since I was working out again and was happy with my weight at the time. Well, that mindset allowed me to slip back into old bad eating habits and slowly start gaining some weight back. I started to get fluffy again!!! Then once again my health put my workouts on hold. Mentally I knew what I needed to do, but I was sooooo frustrated that yet another health issue popped up, I gave up mentally and yet again started eating and drinking what I wanted cause I thought that made me happy since I wasn't happy about my health issues!!! Well that led me to today. Just after Christmas, I put on a pair of jeans that I could barely button. That got my attention!!!!! Now that I have no restrictions from a doctor, I have decided that I am tired of this yo yo feeling because I Always end up unhappy about my situation. So I have control of my mindset....this is HUGE!!!! I also have the nutritional knowledge from Vicki and the drive to take care of my body!!! And if any other health issue pops up, I'm going to remember that nothing good ever comes out of giving up on being healthy. It justs makes the entire situation worse and I end right back to that frustrated state of mind!!!! To keep myself on track, I have an accountability gym friend, I plan my meals ahead of time and I take pics of my progress. When I look at my pics, I get so motivated to see where I can take myself!!! I pray that Vicki knows how much of an impact she has had on my life and will continue to help others. Because the bottom line is that there is no magic pill or powder to help a person Maintain healthy eating habits. You need to empower yourself with knowledge about nutrition (that's what Vicki did for me), take control of your mindset and stuck with it!!!
Another thought.....when ever I got off track I'd feel defeated and just go back to eating yucky. Now I'm going to just get back on that horse and not give up if I have stray. It's stupid to think that if u get off track u might as well keep going....so much of this journey is getting a hold of my head and thoughts! The brain is a powerful thing!!!!! I just keep reminding myself how good I feel right now!!!!! No mental baggage about my body!!!!

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK TALIA VANCE

My story starts long ago, when I first came out of the womb. I was born into a family restaurant, Italian to be exact with delicious home made bread, pizza dough, lasagna, spaghetti sauce and so much more. As I got older, our dinner consisted of 75% carbs and 25% protein. I loved every minute of it and you could tell when you looked at me. Rewards with food were given, traditions of tons of food at the table were had and a mother who had to make sure you took seconds or thirds because there was enough would all affect me later on in life. I am one of the very lucky individuals that had a healthy, happy childhood and life, I never went through any traumatic experiences, my parents took care of me and did whatever they could do to raise me right.
As I got to middle school, my chunkiness continued, I believe it was then that I started having body image issues. I had a friend who was beautiful, all the males flocked to her and I never got any attention. My senior year of high school, 2002, I decided to take control and even ended up losing 15-20 pounds. I was getting attention, people were noticing and it was like fuel to my fire. I did this the nornmal way anyone would with eating more frequently and exercising more. I was not a member of the gym at that time so I did home videos and I was already bringing my own lunch to school but this time I was would start snacking throughout the day. I will always remember my one friend conserned I had an eating disorder bc I stopped eating at lunch but the truth was I had already eaten what I brought by that time. A year passed and I gained most of the weight back from partying and drinking and so then I decided to sign up for the gym. The memebership went on for years with inconsistancy and yo yo dieting. In 2008 I knew I wanted to take the NYS Trooper exam and so I realized I needed to get more in shape for that, I started dieting again and going to the gym religiously. This is where my love for working out came back. The employees at the gym starting noticing my passion and told me I should be trainer that they say what I did and I would be good at it. I was more than thrilled so I stated selling memberships at an all woman's gym, I hate that so I went and took a personal training test and starting training and this is where my struggles began. When I was selling memberships, possibly even before that I was binge eating, it's quite possible it was going on for longer than I realized but never saw it as a problem.
When I started training I kept looking through Oxygen magazines, looking for workouts, got to know all I needed to know about training and food and started labeling foods as good and bad. Good foods would be healthy foods and bad would be cakes, ice cream, processed food. I would go weeks without eating anything bad and the moment that my lips touched something "bad" it was all over. I was very much an all for nothing person, I was either 100% on my diet or 100% off and if I messed up even just a little bit it was enough to throw me over the edge. This went on for literally YEARS. I have tons of food journals, calorie journals, weight log journals, progress pictures, etc etc and so one say I decided to take the big leap into the competing world, After constantly reading fitness magazine it was officially my goal to become a fitness/bikini model. I started working with a trainer but encountered the same issues with binging, before it was 2-3 times per week almost every week, it went down and I made progress but as soon as the competition was over, I had a plan to follow but threw it to the wind because I was deprived all of the "bad" foods and I was craving them all. That was still my battle, I didn't know balance I couldn't eat things in moderation. I was miserable I hated the way I felt and looked would always want to start over but then some little slip up would send me to the bottom again, eating everything I could find, going to various places thinking what I was craving next. I would literally consume thousands of calories in one sitting. These are all things I did before my first competition but I was compensating through more exercise and more restricting leading to the same cycle over and over. My first coach taught me to stop doing that and I only engaged in those behaviors a few times during my first prep but afterwards all I would do was eat bc I knew that over exercising would cause me to be even more hungry. Eventually I started working with the same trainer and was shooting for a show date in Spring of 2012 but I opted out of it when my stress from 2 jobs, going to school, interning, training 2x per diet, posing practice, food prep was all too much for me. This time the rebound was worse and I found myself at my highest weight ever just a few months ago.
In the summer of 2012 I decided it was time to get professional help and the closest I got to was the Psychological Services at UB refereed to me by someone I met off of Team Fit that just so happened to live in Buffalo as well. I was diagnosed with Binge eating disorder non purging type and have been in treatment ever since. I also started a new relationship at that time and with his support along with all of the groups I have on facebook, family and friends I am finally in place where I can eat a trigger food and not indulge or let it lead to a binge. I know I am not in the clear and I know I am not perfect but I have taken everything I have learned from counseling and other peoples experiences with me and I am attempting another bikini competition in 2013. I hired a new coach and I feel like I have a brand new attitude. I never thought I would get to this point but I am here now and I am so proud of myself and thankful for all of those around me that never gave up on me and pushed me to keep going!!! I hope to continue on this path and win my competition in the spring or at least place top 3!

FEATURE FRIDAY Member of the week Rene Latting

First of all...I am so thankful for Vicki and the Team Fit page!!!! I'm so excited to be a part of such a supportive team. I daily look forward to logging into Facebook and rarely look at my own page and go straight to the Team Fit page. Having support and being supportive to others is now a necessity for me.

So....a little about me....well.....I'm 36 yrs old, live in the Dallas Texas area. Married to Brian and between us we have a daughter (21) and two sons (19 and 17).

ALL MY LIFE, my weight has fluctuated. I an remember a picture of me from when I was four years old, I'm standing next to my dad in my aunt's front yard. He is kneeling down to get to my level (he is 6'0") and I'm standing there with a very tight halter top with matching shorts that are OBVIOUSLY too small. My belly is protruding out between the shirt and shorts and I have a half eaten back of M&M's in my hand. In grade school, I was over weight. Given the nick-name of "NO KNEES" by my parents because there was no defining line to where my calf, knee and top part of leg were...they just kind of all ran together. Overweight to the point that the doctor made my mother put me on a diet the summer between my 4th and 5th grade school years. His goal was for me to lose at least 20lbs in the three summer months. My mother made me exercise in the living room in front of her and my dad six days a week. Jumping jacks, running in place, sit ups, etc. The end result...I lost 30lbs in three months. The loss made such a dramatic difference in my appearance, I was thought initially to be a newly transferred student to a school that I had been going to for years.

In junior high school and senior high school my weight went up and down....low enough to wear a bikini, high enough to want to hide every bit of skin. Did it affect my 'boyfriend' situation, no....I had the same boyfriend from 8th grade all the way through my senior year. When I was "skinny" I was very active in working out at the gym where my parents bought a family pass for all of us...but I'm pretty much the one that stuck with it. My main focus though was my legs....NO KNEES haunted me so much...the leg press, calf raises, the stairmaster and the bike became my best friends. The ones I could depend on...always pushing me....always there for me...and drying my tears when I was mad at the ones who labeled me. The pavement became my escape...running sometimes 5 or 7 miles a day...I was able to release all my frustration and not worry about what someone else thought. Finally DEFINITION! I began to receive many compliments on my legs....VERY TONED, VERY DEFINED AND VERY, VERY STRONG. My boyfriend hated it because I was beginning to be more toned and defined that he was...and he was a football player. Was I "skinny"? Yes....not model size two thin...but I was a size 5/7/9......but because of all the heavier than most weight lifting I was doing...I was carrying my 5'4" frame around in a 160lb package.

Fast forward a little.....young marriage (18), young pregnancy (19), young divorce (24), single mom (little income) life....all over an 7 yr period...I ended up gaining 129 lbs over those years....topping out at 289.9 lbs. While being a single mom I had jumped on the Sugar Buster band wagon and cut out all the 'bad carbs'. It worked too. I added Debbie Siebers Slim In 6 program and in a two month period, I had lost down to 249 with diet/exercise. In 2004 I met a wonderful man who loved me no matter what size I was. We married in 2006. And he has been my ROCK ever since. I decided to join Weight Watchers (WW) in September 2009. For Mother's Day in 2010, Brian bought me a treadmill and I slowly begin walking, then running again. I had built myself up to running 20-30 minutes at a time without stopping. I was on cloud nine. That same awesome feeling came flooding back into me from when i was lifting in high school. ACCOMPLISHMENT. By August 2010 I lost down to 207. Then, in November 2010 the program changed and I hit the dreaded plateau. I stayed the same weight for MONTHS. The scale didn't move even 1/2 a lb at my weekly weigh in's. My leader was at a loss. She was reviewing my trackers, having me change up my exercise....NOTHING. I changed everything I and my leader could think of. I poured over the WW blogs for any information. Nothing worked. Around March of 2011, I started having problems with my treadmill. Over a two month period, it was broken 5 weeks. Then the gaining started. Gain two lbs, lose one. Gain 3 lbs, lose 1/2 a lb. Gain 1 lb, lose .2 lb. Not long afterwards, I was promoted at work which called for a transfer to Texas (from IL). With all the commotion that comes with moving and phasing out of my region, learning information for my new role and training the new manager taking over my region, taking care of "me" was not #1 on my list. By the time we arrived in Texas (Aug 2011) I was back up to 217 lbs. Trying to find my place in Texas, going through two different leaders at WW, learning 30 new employees, getting my then 16 yr old son grounded in a school that had more students in it than our whole entire town did in IL took even more of a toll on me. My weight crept back up to 235 lbs. And NO KNEES had reared it's ugly head.

Since January, I've found out that I have an underactive Thyroid. For the past six months I have been working with my Endo on getting my medications correct. Also I have discovered I am lactose intollerant. I have pretty much dropped all dairy (except for lactose free fat free milk in my coffee or oatmeal). Which perturbs me to no end as I LOVE LOVE LOVE Fage! When I do indulge in dairy...OUCH!!!

In June 2012, for Father's Day, Brian decided to give himself a the gift of a gym membership. Little did he know...he was gifting me too! I joined him at the gym one week after he joined and today, I am down to 222. Is NO KNEES still hanging around? As I am writing this, I have looked down several times to curse their existence. Is there muscle there? Most definitely! I have done Vicki's Incline Treadmill challange several times since joining the TF page and WOW does it make a difference. I have also become ADDICTED to spin class. Most morning's I'm up between 4-5:00 a.m. working out at home (Treadmill, P90X or TurboFire) and in the evenings, I'm at the gym...6-7 days a week. My body has changed more and more in the past few months. Oddly enough, I've shopped at the "other end" of my closet recently. Clothes that I as wearing at 207. Surely at 222 they shouldn't fit...but they do. Its yummy muscle!!! Occassionally that most sought after compliment about my legs will come..........AND IT MAKES MY DAY!

I have FIVE 5K's coming up between September and Thanksgiving Day, including the Dirty Girl Mud Run. I'm still a member of WW. Nope...I do not count points anymore. Let's face it, where else can you get weekly face to face 'therapy sessions' for $40 a month. And if you need it, you can go 7 days a week. :-) Seriously though I do love the friendships I have formed as well. It is with one of my WW friends that I am doing all these 5K's with.

Going forward I need to mentally let go of NO KNEES for good. I plan on continuing to eat as clean as possible. I want to focus more on lifting again. Who knows...maybe one day far off...even compete...in something....

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK GAIL HUTCHINSON CAMPOS

First, I’d like to thank Vicki for choosing me as the Feature Friday Member.
I am a 44 year old mother of 2 (23 and 18 year old girls) and soon to be a Grandma.  I have been married to my best friend and husband for 21 years and I have a Golden Retriever named Buddy (who is my husband’s best friend…lol).  When I was growing up, I was always the last one picked at PE.  I didn’t play any sports and was always picked on because I was so tall.  Even as an adult, I wasn’t very active.

My father passed away from heart disease in 2000.  He was only 60 so that was somewhat of a wake up call and that is what prompted me to start my fitness journey.  I quit smoking and started walking around the neighborhood, then running a little bit at a time.  Eventually, I worked my way up to running a 5K race in 2002 and then 10 and 15K races.  Now I feel like Forrest Gump – I can run all day.  Every time I run I think about my father and how he, even though he is gone, helped me to begin my fitness journey.  It took me a long time, though, to completely change my eating habits.  I went to the gym and ran, but continued to eat poorly thinking “I work out so I will burn off the calories.”  Of course now I realize that exercise and proper food choices go hand in hand.  I love to motivate and encourage others to achieve their fitness goals as well.  It has been a long road, but I have come a long way and intend to stay committed to a fit and healthy lifestyle.

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK HELEN ALEXANDER

Hi all, First off I would like to send a BIG THANK YOU to Vicki for choosing me as the Feature Friday Member. Just a little about myself. I am a 45 year old mother of 3 (25, 23, and 13) and grandmother of 2 (one more on the way). Married to my husband Terry for 17 year, we have been together for 20 years. I work outside the home as a Manager in Information Tech at Texas Children’s Health Plan.

As a child I was always involved in sports. I have a love for softball, started playing at age 10 and still play on a co-ed league. My high school days brought on my love for volleyball, played all 4 years. As I went through school my weight fluctuated from 150 to 95 lbs. by my sophomore year. I always struggled with food issues and body image, getting teased and my mother was very over weight, I did not want to become that. The 95 lbs weight my sophomore year was not done in the healthiest of way (eating disorder). Through my first marriage I was always conscious of my weight and most often would venture back to bad habits just to keep my weight down. I divorced in 91 still struggled with my weight but managed to keep it in check, birth to number 3 in 99’ and gained way too much stepped on the scales at 172 the day I delivered (oh By the way I am 5’1”). Did well on getting that weight off in a more healthy way. By this time my mother, really way before 99’, my mother was diagnosis with Type II Diabetes and lost a significant about of weight (probably 75-100 lbs). In 2001 she was diagnosed with colon cancer and had a long hard fight. From 2001 – 2003 my sister and I cared for her either at home or in the hospital with her and my weight took a leap forward. Mom passed away in December 2, 2003. My weight was out of control and in 2005 my sister was diagnosed with colon cancer. (Hello can you say wakeup call). My sister went through two surgeries, chemo and radiation over the course of a year and a half. The physicians urged me to go through genetic testing to see if I had the same genetic malfunction as my sister (lynch syndrome). I put off having the test as my husband was completely against it. By this time (approx 2007)I was tipping the scale at 167 only a few pounds shy of my pregnancy weight with my third child. Instead of going back to bad habits I chose to through Quick Weight Loss center, they helped me tremendously and I lost 30 pounds. During all this time I was not working out, maybe an occasional walk or playing with the kids outdoors.

In 2009 I decided to start cycling and started hearing the words “eating clean”. I had no idea what this meant so of course Internet here I come. I found Tosca’s book and Vicki http://www.eatcleandiet.com/ so I started doing reading and reading and reading. I also decided without the consent of my husband to go forward with the genetic testing. I figure if I wasn’t positive I didn’t have to tell him, but if I was I would cross that bridge when I got there, well test came back positive. This meant that I had a missing chromosome which could lead to colon cancer or various other cancers (ovarian, cervical, stomach). Oh yea my husband wasn’t real pleased that I had the test but he got over it! The recommendation was to remove things I really didn’t need and reduce my cancer risk. In 2010 I had a total hysterectomy which put me into menopause immediately. During all this I am still reading and finding my way around eating clean and still cycling, taking time off to recover from surgery. After my recovery I made a pact with myself to stay as healthy as I could so that I could and will beat this “cancer risk” I have. Having lynch syndrome puts me a much greater risk of developing specific cancers (colon, stomach) than the average person in the upwards of 80% greater chance. So eating healthy and keeping my body in shape will even further reduce that risk. Since this roller coaster (2010 to current) ride I have completed 3- 5K obstacle races, 25K Trail Run, and various other races/runs (half Marathon Dec 2011), 4 MS150 cycling events (this is a two day cycling event from Houston Tx to Austin 167 miles total in two days) as well as my first Duathlon last August. On the calendar right now is my first Triathlon in two weeks, 2 Obstacle runs, 10 for Texas run and two Coed Softball tournaments.

I have a love for working out and keeping fit and my family supports me (most of the time lol). Life is not easy but we all have to make the best of what we have and what we are handed. I want to set a good example for my children and motivate them to be healthy. Thank you again for letting me tell my story.

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK AMY SHERBURNE HEIGEL

I am 41 years old, no children, and I am a widow. I lost my husband Jim to cancer on May 17th, 2008. I quit smoking on July 4th, 2009 and started clean eating in March 2010. I eat pretty clean but continue to struggle with portion sizes especially when I am stressed. I have struggled with weight all my life. I graduated high school weighing 185. I have been working out for over 20 years pretty consistently doing cardio, abs, and weight lifting.
After the death of my husband, I needed something to focus on other than going into a deep depression/over-eating. So I decided to compete in my very first all-natural bodybuilding competition.  I achieved this goal on October 16th, 2010. I placed 2nd out of 5. Then I lost my mother on November 27th, 2011. She was my best friend.  Again I needed something to focus on. I started training for my second all-natural bodybuilding competition. I achieved this goal on May 19th, 2012. I placed 4th out of 7.

My future goals:  To compete again in May 2013, continue to train hard, clean up my eating habits (90% clean eating) and enjoy/appreciate every day of my life.  LIFE IS WAY TO SHORT!

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMEBER OF THE WEEK KRISTY PALM KOINSKI

Hi Everyone!  Here is a little background on me.  I am a 34 year old preschool teacher (with a BS in Engineering).  I have been married for almost 11 years and have been with my husband since the summer of 1995.  We have 3 children together, one of which has Autism. We have a small farm where we raise beef and layer chickens (fresh eggs).  Hubby still works 40 hrs a week outside of the house.

As a child and in high school, I was either in a sport or taking dance classes. I was always doing something.  My story starts out in college where I gained the “Freshman 15”!!  I started gaining weight there and after getting married in 2001, I was pregnant with #1 within months.  I gained another 60lbs with her.  Over the next 5 years I never lost all the “baby” weight and had 2 more children gaining 60lbs with each one.  I delivered each child weighing over 210lbs!!  I was wearing a women’s size 22-24. I had food issues dealing with the taking care of and the death of my mother while pregnant with my 2nd child and then again dealing with his diagnoses of Autism. This is far from my high school graduation weight of 133lb on my 5”4’ frame.

I didn’t want to do things outside with my family because I didn’t have the energy to keep up with them.  This was very frustrating and upsetting to me.  We live on a farm so there is a lot to do.  It was a struggle for me to do the simplest things.  So I stayed inside and comforted myself with food.  How could a girl that loved the outdoors and was a playing a sport every season in high school now be isolated inside unable to keep up with her family?

I managed to maintain a weight around 165lbs.  I knew that I was big and out of shape,
but in my mind I was never THAT big.  A friend asked me to come with her to her “gym”.  This was gym uses a combination of interval, rep out and MMA training.  Since the gym membership that I never used in college (do to lack of knowledge, motivation and lots of excuses!) ran out I thought, “What do I have to lose?  I cannot let myself go anymore”.  So I started with her 2 nights a week.  Within 6 months of hard work and dedication, I was changing right before my eyes.  I didn't make dietary changes at first, but started noticing huge changes in my appearance!! As time went on, my body continued to metamorphosis. Never in a million years did I ever think that this overweight mom of 3, who wasn't the least bit confident, do so much! I was stronger, skinnier and healthier!! I was coming to the gym 5 nights a week and loving every minute of it. I ran my first 5K in the fall of 2012.  I didn’t even have to stop.  This was amazing since the last time I ran any distance was the mile in high school!!  That is where I learned that running does something for your body that the gym doesn’t.  I don’t have access to a treadmill or elliptical.  This helped lean out the areas that I was missing in the gym.  Now I love to run and look forward to that “me” time to clear my head.  I cleaned up my diet about 4 months later and got my family on board with me.  Now my husband and I spend time together working out. I realized very recently that food and exercise are the only things that I could control the outcome of when times are tough. It was very empowering for me when I seemed powerless over anything else around me.  Going to the gym is not only good for my PHYSICAL health, it works for my MENTAL health too!  Food is FUEL not comfort. I am currently training for an upcoming Tough Mudder in the fall.

Hardbody Fitness, my “happy place”, has changed my life.  I love it so much, I decided to become an instructor and share my passion and results with everyone else. I am still work in progress.  I still struggle at times, but now I recognize this weakness and I make a change before it gets me. My goals now are to train hard, eat well, believe in myself and inspire others who think they "can't". I can, and will do things I never imagined possible. The key is surrounding yourself with like minded POSITIVE people. I'm so lucky to have a few of those in my life that inspire me daily.

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK ALEXANDRA CEDENO

I've been active most of my life; I was a dancer for over 12 years and was a cheerleader in high school. I became fairly sedentary in college and became skinny fat; taking an exercise class here and there and eating a pizza afterwards. How I didn't blow up is beyond me!

I was about 25 when my ex and I decided to join the gym together and get into better physical shape. At first I was so self conscious... but i kept training and began to notice the desired changes in my body. After a year or so I started teaching Spin classes and really found my training groove! I would eat sleep and breathe fitness; i loved it!!

After a year or so my ex began using steroids, and the quantity and frequency increased dramatically. By the time that unhealthy relationship finally ended; I was almost emaciated from stress and had a skewed perception of body image; which is quite a hurdle when you're a therapist.

I'm finally getting a healthy balance, l've got a great group of healthy, natural friends who are really supportive and love to train hard. My goal is to continue sculpting a healthy, tight bikini body...and I don't need to leg press 500 lbs to do so.

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK DANIELLE HEBERT TOLBERT

My name is Danielle Tolbert. I’m a high energy, self-motivated, fun loving person who loves my family and loves people!! I’m married to a wonderful man who is my best friend and the greatest dad I could ever ask for our two boys. We met in college and our love for fitness and sports has always been very important to us. When I was pregnant with our first son, I was put on bed rest at 28 weeks for preterm labor. I had already gained more than expected by that point, then after being on bed rest for the next 12 weeks, my weight gain quickly ballooned to about 70 lbs. After having our son via C section, I was really depressed. I loved my child but the weight gain was taking a toll on me emotionally.
First Pregnancy

I thought I would never be the same again. When I finally decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and get off my butt (and I do mean BUTT), I decided to start hitting the gym. The only time I could go was before work so I would go at 6 am while my husband would be home with our son. I used to be very fit and even teach aerobics, therefore it was humbling stepping foot into the gym. I was so much larger that I had nothing to even wear to the gym! I remember going in a large T shirt and my husband’s Umbro shorts!! Do you remember Umbro’s? Wow. I would go every morning (usually hiding out at the elliptical in the back corner) and when I started to see results, it motivated me to work out even harder! It took a year but by my son’s first birthday, I felt healthy and fit again. I enjoyed my time as a mom with only one child but I knew we wanted another child. I had been very active by lifting weights, running and playing soccer on an adult women’s soccer league.

I finally felt it was time, our first son was 3 ½ and I knew I needed/wanted to do it again. Did I feel selfish for not wanting to do that to my body again? Yes, but I also knew I needed to be ready physically and emotionally to do that again. So, we got pregnant with our second son and history repeated itself! I couldn’t believe my body would balloon out that big again! I didn’t have a complicated pregnancy this time and no bed rest but my body still gained around 65lbs. I had another C section and when I could get back to working out, I did. This time we had a gym in our garage which made it much easier to get it done whenever I needed to. Though easier, the hard part was still ahead of me. I was depressed again with my body. I remember a moment crying in the department store dressing room, thinking this was it. Not only did getting back to normal seem hopeless, but this pregnancy also came with a hernia the size of a grapefruit in my abdomen, and severe diastasis recti. I was in serious pain and my back hurt all the time. Every time I ate l looked 6 months pregnant again! It was a depressing cycle. I worked through the pain most days trying to lose all of the weight. The hernia was a medical problem that was getting worse and causing alarm so I had surgery to repair the hernia caused by the pregnancy. This too, set me back in my journey to getting my body back. After the recovery period, I was back at it again.

I have continued to stay active by weight training, doing cardio, and eating clean. My friends call me a Transformer. They couldn’t believe my transformation, not once, but twice! I think my mission in life is to inspire other women to get fit and eat clean. If I can transform my body and mind, I know you can too! It was not easy, but if you do it the correct way it will become a lifestyle that transfers to your children as well. I love being a fit and active mom and my husband and children love it too!! Hang in there momma’s, you can do it!!

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER : SUSIE BOUCHELLE KANE

Writing about my fitness journey is always emotional for me, and not always easy to put into words. It is about so much more than a look or working out for me. Weighing in at 210 lbs at 14 and a size 18 pants, I didn't get off to the best start. I lost about 60 lbs after that and lived my teenage years thinner but never feeling like "the other girls". I wasn't athletic for sure.... Life goes on, I met my husband and we had a baby. 90 lbs of baby weight later and weighing 237 lbs, I knew something seriously needed to happen. It took several years but finally got down to a comfortable size and weight. I think I was about 28 and I went to a gym.... That's what healthy people are supposed to do, right? Who knew it'd be the start of something great!!! I was really good at it!!! I didn't make dietary changes at first, but started noticing huge changes in my look!! As time went on, I continued to progress. Never in a million years did I ever think that this fat kid who wasn't at all confident (even as an adult) could do so much!!! About 8 half marathons, 2 full marathons, and 4 triathlons later it hit me!! I can really do this stuff, which means that anyone can!!

In the last few years my world was turned upside down.... My marriage fell apart, I gained about 20 lbs, and my body was exhausted. My only distraction became my focus on food and fitness. I started seeing an incredible nutritionist, Dave Pulcinella. Even working with him, my mindset wasn't right. I failed miserably.... 2 more years go by, then things started to change!! I realized very recently that food and exercise are the only things that I could control the outcome of when everything else around me was crumbling. It was very empowering for me when I seemed powerless over anything else around me.

I started seeing Dave again back in October 2011. He's been pivotal in changing my mindset about food and exercise, and I now realize that the possibilities are endless and up to me. Fitness and food issues are a huge long journey for people like me and many others. It's taken so many years to figure out how to work through it, but by the grace of God I think I'm well on my way. It is still a struggle at times, but I'm quick to recognize a weak moment and take charge of it before it gets me. My goals now are to train hard, eat well, inspire others who think they "can't", and always believe in myself. I can, and will do things I never imagined possible. The key is surrounding yourself with like minded positive people. I'm so lucky to have a few of those in my life that inspire me daily. Always push forward and never give up.

FEATURE FRIDAY - Colleen Coppens Krauter

Welcome to another Feature Friday this week you get to learn a little more about Colleen she was sweet enough to share her amazing journey with all of us ....enjoy, you will be inspired :)

Hello everyone and thanks for taking the time to read my story. Truth be told, it feels weird writing it out and while doing so, I didn’t realize I had so much to say. I apologize for the length in advance, and believe me, this is the condensed version

Here’s My Story: I’m 36 years old, married for 6 years and we have 2 cats. My hubby and I have been together since 2000. I have a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, but I haven’t practiced in a long time; gave it up for personal reasons. I played volleyball in high school and still do occasionally. I’m a big fan of weight-lifting (shocker!), in-line skating, backpacking, flexibility movements of all types and just about anything that will keep me fit (except for long distance running). If my life could be summed up in a music title, I think it would be “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. And if a movie could describe overall how I’ve felt about my life up until now, it would be probably be “Waiting to Exhale”, but with a sequel called “And She Finally Has.”

My story is probably not that much different than yours: A kid who grew up gaining weight, developed body image issues that hid underneath some false self-confidence and became a “dieting expert” over the last 20 years. I’ve probably lost about 500 pounds in my lifetime. You know how it goes -- lose 50, gain 20…lose 30, gain 40…lose 40, gain 50. You get the point. Dieting on and off just became a way of life, all that I knew. If I wrote a diet book based on my experiences, it would be about what NOT TO DO when dieting because I’ve done it all. My first diet I can ever remember (started by my parents), I was 10 years old. I wasn’t that overweight, but I think my parents were trying to help in general so it doesn’t get out of control. It had the opposite effect as I learned most of my unhealthy habits with food/dieting from those who thought they knew too.
Yo-yo dieting was a way of life for me and from that, a binge eating disorder developed slowly over the years, hiding behind emotional and sometimes painful issues stemming from childhood. You know the one, where you inhale everything insight, despite being full and stomach hurting so badly that you can’t lay down or stand up and even to the point you think about purging it all, but don’t, and swear you’ll never do it again! I grew up with many interesting family dynamics, (i.e. parents with an open marriage) and over time, some emotional issues developed and slowly manifested into a spiral effect of bad eating/binging type behaviors. Actually, despite my unconventional upbringing, I’m actually well-grounded overall.
I knew something wasn’t right with the way I ate at times, but didn’t know it had a name. It was probably 3 years ago that I started to recognize it more and then realized I had a MAJOR problem with it when I started training for my first bikini competition in 2011. Because I had already emerged myself into health a fitness for several years by then and taking on a different path with it, I was forced to deal with my emotional binging issue head on (like the panic attacks it would cause me knowing I was going to a party or buffet) . What made me realize it was a bigger problem than once thought were the programmed “cheat meals” while training. Only, they weren’t structured – I was told by my trainer, “eat as much as you can, take a small break, and then eat some more.” Wow, sounds like my ultimate dream came true, right? Little did he realize who he was dealing with because this chic can eat!! My 2x a week “cheat meals” were not working for me (shocker!) as I would totally overeat and undo all the hard work for the week, then wallow in self-pity, anger and berate my body/metabolism for turning against me. So I began self-regulating on my own, going from 2x a week, down to 1x per, then none at all because I just knew I didn’t have a handle on them. Some of you may even remember me posting my struggles late last year at times, while I was battling my inner demons on binge eating and trying to sort out the murkiness of it all.
Since I’ve been overweight almost all my life, I hid behind certain types of clothing too. Ashamed of my hefty legs, I haven’t wore short in 20 years, even in hot weather (I still haven’t yet, but I wear capris) or bathing suits, even one a one-piece (but I am getting better wearing a bikini now in my house). I’ve missed events because I was ashamed of how I would look in a dress, such as my high school prom, and even attending a friend’s wedding. Over the years, I’ve let my weight hold me back from pursuing many things in life, I recognize that now. I am a fairly well-rounded person, but even I didn’t realize how much part of my self-esteem was wrapped up in my weight and the ways I let it stop me from feeling confident in my abilities in some areas (my career for starters).
In 2003, I was my heaviest at 240 pounds. Thankfully, I hid my actual weight well as no one would ever think I was 240. I was thick, not flabby and still had a small, hourglass waist with big boobs (HAHA!). My BFF lost a lot of weight through Weight Watchers, which inspired me to try and I took off 60 pounds. I was out of the 200’s, weighing 180. I actually always ate healthy prior to WW, just too much of it or wrong combinations. WW taught me portion control and what it really looks like, but of course my binging behaviors were never addressed.
My weight constantly fluctuated between 180-200 pounds, but by 2007, I got on another health kick and bought P90X and told myself I was gonna do this! (whatever that looked like). I put on my “what-was-I-thinking-when-bought-this-bikini- at- 200-pounds” and took several before pictures. GAWD, the horror when I look back at them! I did P90X for a year and while I can’t remember what I lost, I do remember gaining the non-tangibles like more confidence, strength, and commitment , which made me want more. I never followed the diet as recommended, but in hindsight, I guess I wasn’t ready to change everything just yet even though I would dream of being thinner.
In 2009, weighing 185 pounds (but again, just lost 10 pounds), my next door neighbor and I began a healthy journey together that lasted about 2 years. We worked out to many, many videos, trained for our first 5K race together, joined WW together and from that, I dropped about 20 pounds. Support and commitment to each other was incredible and we just kept plowing away at old behaviors and opening our minds to new challenges to conquer, but still never addressed my eating disorder.
By 2011, weighting 166, I hit a low point in my life despite working out steadily with my neighbor. For almost 2 years, my husband was laid off and we struggled financially and emotionally together. He was finally working again, but traveled a lot or worked 12 hours a day/7 days a week. I was lonely, tired, a little depressed, feeling sorry for myself and overall just fed up with everything. However, instead of throwing in the towel completely, I fought back and found a project to make my focus – ME! And this is when I hired my first-ever trainer and said “train me like a bodybuilder” because I wanted to lose 20 pounds.
But from that point on, the desire to just lose 20 pounds turned into something much bigger than I ever imagined and I kept going, even though I didn’t know where I was going either. Not with just losing weight, but understanding my personal issue with food, fixing my body hormonally, stop being scale obsessed and focus on cleaner-eating. Each milestone I conquered, I wanted more, and eventually help me stop living my life “being on a diet!” No more of “I’ll start Monday” or “I shouldn’t have eaten that, so I guess I’ll eat everything in sight as punishment” type of thinking. I had to deprogram old thinking/behaviors on everything I knew about weight/fat loss, keep an open mind and relearn who I was when not “dieting”, but just “living” life as a balanced lifestyle.
Mid way through my “change”, people would say, “You made it now” just because I lost some weight. What they didn’t realize (and some still don’t) is that I never thought “I made it” despite the weight loss because food still had CONTROL over me. I still lived in fear of food, withheld myself from eating things only to binge later on down the road, I still fluctuated with my weight, never felt balanced (emotionally or hormonally), still thinking negative thoughts and picking apart who I was. Basically, I was still letting my bodyweight /body image define my worth as a woman and a person. So, I still kept pushing forward and tackling whatever issue that decide to surface at that moment. I’ve learned so much about myself and what I am capable of doing, but sadly I also learned who my true friends are/were along the way. Many figured this was a fad and talked badly about me and I became an outsider because they didn’t understand my personal struggles/pain all this years. I finally woke up (mentally) and said, “Why do I keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results?” I knew I had to change everything I knew about weight loss, but little did I know it would change my entire well-being, inside and out.
I look back on my journey and I remember all the struggles and pains I went through, what I denied myself because of my weight. I let IT define who I was, which held me back longer than I should have. But I’ve always been a fighter and rarely do I throw in the towel…probably because I don’t know how too. Mom always said I was stubborn. =)

Conclusion: At this point in my life, I feel emotionally calm, in control of my body/mind, and truly happy with whom I have become as a woman. I weigh 148 pounds with a complete change in body composition from fat loss/muscle gain! And today, I can PROUDLY claim that I’m a recovering emotional binger!! And while I am happy with that scale number and where I am at today, I am always looking to challenge myself one way or another (physically/mentally/emotionally). There is never a finish line with me, just stepping stones, destinations to reach and conquering untraveled paths. This is my lifestyle, my peace of mind that I’ve earned over the last 2 years. I still have some minor uphill battles to face at times, but that’s how life is, but at least I know how to cope and overcome them. Being a part of Team Fit and sharing with like-minded individuals through FB taught me I suffer from metabolism issues from all the yo-yo dieting, emotional binge eating and that I can correct the physical and emotional parts of me through consistency, hard work, determination, and of course clean-eating life style. I no longer think I’m “special” with “special issues” -- I was just wounded for many years.

Special thanks to:
Vicki Royer for developing Team Fit into one giant, ongoing Group Therapy session, to the members who’ve reached out to me and shared their experience/ knowledge in my time of need, and of course, to my hubby who saw the “thin girl” in me even when I was fat and ALWAYS stood by my side through my many tearful struggles and painful moments and let me blossom into what I am now. You are all a part of my success story, in some shape or form!

FEATURE FRIDAY MEMBER OF THE WEEK MICHELLE MOCK WALTERS

Michelle was one of my very first clients and let me just say she was a true pleasure to get to know. I love her heart & her desire to keep pushing herself never giving up when it got hard..Enjoy her inspiring story!

I used to be envious of those who were skinny…wishing I could be just like them. (of course I did NOTHING to help the situation). Now, I don’t want to be told that. I want to looked at as someone who is strong, muscular, toned, healthy!! I’m setting new goals!

As I walked down the streets of Pittsburgh this past weekend, I past a girl who had very muscular arms and I thought WOW! Her arms are awesome!! Then, I thought, I want people to look at me and know that I workout!
I am busy and just an average person just like many of you! I just celebrated a bday in April and joined the 40 club! WOW!! Never thought that I’d be saying that. But, I’m ok with it because you know what… I don’t feel 40 and don’t feel I look 40 (could come from playing form 5 year olds all day!) I have been married for almost 15 years to my husband, Ron. We have 3 boys that are 13, 10 and 6. They alone keep me busy with all the sports that they play in and after school activities that they have. I’m a Kindergarten teacher, a Beachbody coach, a fitness leader a few times a week, a Sun. School teacher and an assist. Youth leader. So, I wear many hats. No matter what I’m doing, I always make time for my workouts because they are what keeps me going and feeling good!

Well, I was never really athletic or in shape. I wasn’t fat but wasn’t fit either. I enjoyed eating and didn’t workout much through high school. Then, I went to college and met a friend. I truly believe the reason that we were meant to meet was for him to intro. me to fitness! I fell in love with it and luckily, I never gained the freshman 15 that everyone dreads. But I also didn’t get a toned muscular body either. BECAUSE, I didn’t learn how to eat right. I LOVED my carbs and now I know how they weren’t helping my cause!

After having 3 boys, I def. had a different body. I worked out during my pregnancies and after but after my last son, I took a look one day and thought I need to do something about this body!

This was my before body about 2 ½ years ago.

I decided I wanted to do something so I joined WW with a bunch of teacher friends. I completely disagree with their process and how the points are calculated. But, It did help me and taught me about portions and through it I lost 16 lbs. As I was doing this I decided to add running to my list of things to do! I didn’t think I’d be able to run. Rem. I never really did this type of thing!

But, I started entering into 5ks with some of my friends. I loved it!! It was a new challenge and made me feel good to do these races. I was winning and feeling a sense of accomplishment. I even completed a half marathon in a time of 1:54. I was proud of myself for NOT being a runner and making it!! Any of us can do anything we put our minds to.
Now I’m down 20lbs and I’m so excited that the pants I have are too big and I’m giving them away and getting a new size from a friend!! What a wonderful feeling, huh?? I’m now wearing a 6 a size that I never even wore in school!

I now become a Beachbody coach after reading several success stories and contacting one girl to explain Beachbody further! She told me how wonderful it is and I couldn’t say no. I am loving all the products that they promote and use them to help others!

So, it’s been about 3 years now, and, one day I happened to spot Vicki’s page on FB and decided I wanted her to help me! She has been a friend, a coach and a motivator everyday! I’ve come to learn so much through the site and through Vicki. My eating has changed for the better. I now understand how to put foods together and why even though I thought I was eating healthy I really wasn’t. I still need to work on my choices once in awhile but I’m getting there and because of this results are showing! I’ve also learned to love working out in a variety of ways! I still love my Turbo Fire workouts, running, P90X, Jamie Eason but I’ve learned how to develop my own workouts and do circuits! I love lifting weights and have learned that you don’t have to kill yourself in the gym for hours.
Weights have definitely become my friend! I’ve also taken Vicki’s advice on doing 10% incline on the treadmill and love it and so do my legs, along with doing 30 sec. sprints for 30 min!! Pushing yourself a little each time brings an awesome feeling that you CAN do this!!! I’m so thankful to Vicki for all that she has taught me!

I’m not envious of those skinny girls anymore because my goals have changed. I want to be strong, toned and healthy! I’ve changed my life and my lifestyle is now leading me to each day where I make good/wise choices. I’m on a new path and I’m excited to be on it! I’m def. far from perfect and don’t know a lot but am willing to learn new things everyday. I’m now helping others and seeing them make changes in their lives and body and when that happens you feel so proud of what they have done!

This says it all!! It’s all worth it! Thank you Vicki for leading me!!!
