I am a 44 year old mother of 2 (23 and 18 year old girls)
and soon to be a Grandma. I have been
married to my best friend and husband for 21 years and I have a Golden Retriever
named Buddy (who is my husband’s best friend…lol). When I was growing up, I was always the last
one picked at PE. I didn’t play any
sports and was always picked on because I was so tall. Even as an adult, I wasn’t very active.
My father passed away from heart disease in 2000. He was only 60 so that was somewhat of a wake
up call and that is what prompted me to start my fitness journey. I quit smoking and started walking around the
neighborhood, then running a little bit at a time. Eventually, I worked my way up to running a
5K race in 2002 and then 10 and 15K races.
Now I feel like Forrest Gump – I can run all day. Every time I run I think about my father and
how he, even though he is gone, helped me to begin my fitness journey. It took me a long time, though, to completely
change my eating habits. I went to the
gym and ran, but continued to eat poorly thinking “I work out so I will burn
off the calories.” Of course now I
realize that exercise and proper food choices go hand in hand. I love to motivate and encourage others to
achieve their fitness goals as well. It
has been a long road, but I have come a long way and intend to stay committed to
a fit and healthy lifestyle.
