FEATURE FRIDAY Member of the Week Shannon Martin

I started my weight loss in 2007 weighing at 200lbs. I came across this book called the "Zone Diet" by Dr. Sears. We picked it up one day while in a book store and got our attention about our weight. The book isn't a diet, he explains about health and the goods and bads in foods and gives you a better understanding about everything concerning your health and what can happen to you. For about two years, from 2007-2009 I learned how to clean up our diet. I never kept a log nor kept count of my intake. You basically are what you eat. It wasn't easy, thats for sure. When your used to eating boxed food and canned goods. That always seemed to be the easy way out. What got my attention about my weight was that my feet started to hurt cause of my weight. I was 24 years old at the time. I asked myself "Whats next insulin" I didn't want to become a dibetic at such a young age. I didn't start excerising till about the middle of 2008. We couldnt afford a gym membership at the time so I just did push ups, pull ups and sit ups. I could remember that I couldn't even do one pull up. Its something that you have to work at. So eating clean and doing that little bit of excerise can make a difference.Oct. 0f 2009, I sat on the side lines on a local race "Freedoms Run" in Shepherdstown, WV . That day of the event Oct. 1, 2009 changed my life forever. I saw all shapes and sizes of people who were running 5k's-Full Marathon. I said to myself "If they can do, then so can I". And so I started running after that day. I've never ran in my life, only when I was a child. That same month I signed up for my first race April 2010 8K Wild Woman Race in Frederick, Md and once again Lisa was there to support me. You will notice me mention Lisa alot, cause she has been there alot to support me. After that 8K I was hungry for more. April of 2010 after the 8K I signed up for my first Half Marathon in Baltimore, Md for Oct. 2010. I finished that Half Marathon in 2hr. and 14mins. Once again, I can't thank Lisa enough for cheering me on at the finish and preparing for my first big race.2011 has been a great year for my in my races till June 2011. I've won a 5k and a 10k race this year and haven't really ran since June due to hamstring injury. But I didn't let that hold me down. I took my workouts and cardio else where and enjoyed it as much as I do running. Was my weight loss hard? No. What is easy? Hell No!! I always tell myself "You want it, You earn it". Remember you can't just workout and eat what you want or visa versa. You have to do both. There is alot to learn about healthy eating but once you learn it, it sticks with you like anything else but you have to put your heart into it. You don't have to spend hours in the gym. 30 mins a day can do alot!! If your health is important to you then the small things can wait. Good luck to you all and if you jump off the wagon, then your only leting yourself down. My lowest weight reached was 120lbs Summer of 2011. All I did was run and no weight training. A year later and now 2012 I've gain 15lbs of lean muscle. It was that runners injury I got made me research more about what workouts runner do. And its SO important to weight train to prevent injury. Once I healed I took it to a whole new level. By Spring of 2012 I ran the Frederick, MD Half Marathon and set a goal of finishing at 2 hours and I crossed that line at 1:51:51 I felt so accomplished. I now weigh 134lbs and maintaining. Thats the easy part. Remember it takes time and determination. Its taken me over 5 years to get where I am today. If you can't do it natural then your not strong enough to do it. All of your vitamins should come from whole foods. So, save your money on those supplements and invest it in whole foods. God didn't make powders, he made plants for us to eat from. There is no easy way!! I've read and researched everything I know and do. I'm always looking for something new to challenge myself to the extreme. Just believe in yourself and your goals can be met.

I am now a certified BodyPump Instructor and Personal Training is in my future. Its time for me to start "Pay it Forward"
